Japan Open Golf Championship 2019
Ryo Ishikawa finishes his Round 2 with total 8 over par and sit on the bubble for the cutline
Ryo made 3 straight bogies from 14, and then had to pay double bogey on the tough Par 3 17th. On his last hole on his front nine, his tee shot went way left, and had to hit from the wet muddy ground for his 2nd shot, which led to another bogey. He lost 6 shots on last 5 holes of his front nine.
After the turn, he made 2 birdies on 3 and 5, but still not enough to be safe from the cutline. So, Ryo kept on going aggressive.
"I wanted to know what kind of shot I could perform under situations like this."
He kept on using his 1W from 7th hole and on. On 8th, his tee shot went over the right-side trees onto the next hole, 3rd hole's rough. But he shot it back between the trees to the rough on the 8th, and made a great short game to 1-meter to the pin to save par.
Then on the last 419 yards 9th, which is left to right dogleg Par 4, he didn't lay it up and went for the green with his 1W. This magnificent shot got to 30-40 yards to the green.
"The 3rd shot from the right side rough was good, I felt that I shot it perfectly, but it was about 1.5-2 meters short."
His downhill birdie putt didn't hole in, but he made a 2 putt for par. He has 40 for his front nine, but bogey free 3 under for his back nine which got him still hanging at 8 over par, provisional 70T. Since the Round 2 was suspended, he needs to wait until Saturday afternoon to see if he is still moving on to the weekend rounds.
"I had so many mistakes hitting it to left this week. I really haven't figure out why. My shot could be great and suddenly I make miss shots. It's all because I haven't found the reason for this mistakes."
Ryo has made 2 straight wins, which he never has done before and although Shugo took his position with last week's win, Ryo was at No.1 on the Money Rankings for several weeks. He really wanted to have his momentum go on to grab this week's Major title. Next will is US PGA Tour co-sanctioned ZOZO Championship.
"If I miss the cut and end this week like this, I will have to face next week with so many anxieties. I never wished to be like this, but I must figure out what to prepare."
