Shigeo Nagashima INVITATIONAL Sega Sammy Cup 2022

Iwata snatches lead as Kennedy slips on a rain-soaked day

Iwata snatches lead as Kennedy slips on a rain-soaked day

Australia’s Brad Kennedy battled through the heavy rains before posting a third-round one-under-par 71 for a share of 11th place at the Shigeo Nagashima Invitational Sega Samy Cup.

The Australian’s three-day total of six-under-par 210 means he will head into the final round eight shots back of Japanese leader Hiroshi Iwata, who returned with a 66 to take a slender one-shot lead over second-round leader Takumi Kanaya at the North Country Golf Club.

Kennedy, who is chasing his second win at the Shigeo Nagashima Invitational Sega Samy Cup since his last victory at the 2018 edition, conceded he is left with a mountain to climb after trading two bogeys against three birdies under challenging and wet conditions.

He said: “The pin positions were all on top of the hill and it was tricky to get the yardages right to get it close. I made a couple of mistakes and overall, the conditions were really tough.

“I hope the weather gets better tomorrow. I’m eight shots behind and I have got nothing to lose. I just got to play an amazing round of golf to try to get in touch with the leaders. If not, I’ll just keep working on getting my form back for the next few weeks.”

Iwata was pleased to hit the front despite having to endure his indifferent swings. The Japanese started strongly with three birdies in his opening five holes. After turning in 33, the parred the next five holes before storming home with another three birdies in his closing four holes.

“My swing got worse midway through today. So, I was doing my best to keep my swing and score intact.

“My putting was okay and I was trying to experience different golf techniques this week. So, hopefully, everything all works out well tomorrow,” said the Japanese.

South Africa’s Shaun, meanwhile, had a day to forget after he struggled to a 73 to end the day tied for 32nd place.

“My golf was terrible today. I couldn’t give myself enough opportunities and when I did, I didn’t take advantage of them.

“It didn’t work out today. I have to do something special to catch up and find all my confidence for the next tournament,” said the South African, who is making his fourth JGTO start this week.
