Mynavi ABC Championship Golf Tournament 2019
Satoshi Kodaira marks Course Record Tie score of 62 on Round 3 at MyNavi ABC Championship
He started out with trouble shots as he bended his tee shot into right trees and had to make it out of the branches, but he didn't hesitate to go aggressive. He made a shot go through just 2-meter space in between the trees and got it to 4-meters and holed it for birdie.
Then he went on to make another birdie on 2nd, and then 3 birdies in a row from 4th hole. He finished his first nine with making 12-meter birdie putt.
"My tee shots and iron shots were great. And the putter I got it out from the closet last week is working great."
His momentum didn't even slow down on his back nine. He made 4-meter eagle putt on 15th, and he also made 8-meter birdie putt on the 17th. With this birdie he caught up with the leader at that time, he went on very aggressive on the final 18th Par 5, got it on the green in 2 and 2 putted for a birdie finish.
"I definitely will win this week and go back to US PGA Tour with regained confidence."
Satoshi made a stumbling start on his Round 2 as he made 3 bogeys in a row, but he made the birdie rush today to jump up to solo 3rd. This was a coincidentally similar scene Satoshi was watching close hand last week as Tiger Woods made "Tiger Charge" and scooped away the victory No.82. Satoshi had the privilege to play along with Tiger for the first 2 rounds at ZOZO.
"I learned so much from those rounds. Tigers strong will to never give up, get really concentrated to make the birdies possible from everywhere on the course. He was so consistent and focused. I really felt that I must look up to him and learn. I know that I am not even close to Tiger, but I think I was able to absorb some of the teachings from last week and that resulted in today's score."
Satoshi won at the RBC Heritage to become the 5th Japanese player to win in US PGA Tour. His plan at the time was to come back to Japan for Japan Open and ZOZO Championship, then fly back to US. But he had change of his heart because, "I got good images on my shots by playing along with world's top players and I wanted to make it sink into my body. In order to do that I thought staying in home ground Japan Tour would help. So, my goal for this week is to win, nothing less."
