Same as Fuji Sankei Classic in September, this week's tournament must start with out the Defending Champion's presence. Last year in 2019, Chan Kim was able to win his 4th victory in Japan Tour after having the struggling year with his injuries.

"I was looking very much forward for the first ever Champion's Dinner that I would had been able to attend. Due to this pandemic, I am not able to attend the tournament to defend my title. It is very unfortunate."
This was the message sent by Chan Kim to the tournament organizers just before the tournament started.

In 2018 season, with his back and left wrist injury, he wasn't able to play any tournament, so his win here at Japan Open Golf Championship last year meant BIG. He loudly announced his "come back" by conquering the tough course by playing very aggressive and showed off his world class driving distance.

"The Japan No.1 title is given to the winner here, so this tournament is very special for every player. I am honored to have won here at this prestigious tournament."

Chan Kim was eager to challenge defending his Title but easing of the immigration restrictions notice came at the end of September and it was too late. Chan Kim could not get his documents for the re-entry Visa ready and had to cancel his appearance.
"It is also too bad that I could not meet all the fans and volunteers in Japan."

Same as Chan Kim, most of the International players could not attend this week's tournament. Also, other events such as Pro-Am tournament and Champion's Dinner was also cancelled.

"I am wishing everybody's safely and wellbeing during this pandemic and the success of the tournament. I hope I could go back to Japan soon and play there."

Tournament Organizer, Japan Golf Association (JGA) has placed 25% of the purse to ensure the Infection prevention measures. This year, the purse will be reduced to 157.5 million yen.
