Golf Nippon Series JT Cup 2020
Mikiya Akutsu feels blessed with the miraculous ticket into the JT Cup
"This is just unbelievable thing. I have been watching the tournament on TV since I was a child, and although it is under different circumstances, I am overwhelmed to have this opportunity. I honestly feel blessed."
Every year, only 30 best players of the season filled with the winners and top money rankers are invited to be in this prestigious filed. But this year the qualification was changed to Top 3T finished of the 5 tournaments this years and other spots will be filled accordingly to the Money Rankings of the year 2020 until it reaches up to 30 players.
This announcement was made on November 9th, same week as Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters.
"I started off as 3rd on the 1R but stumbled on later rounds. Thanks to my experience as a caddie at that course, I was able to finish at 10th. That got me this chance to be in JT Cup. I have only seen the Tokyo Yomiuri CC on TV, so this monster course was over my imagination. Especially on the greens, if you hit it 3 times, it rolls to 3 different ways. Some greens you have to hit it toward your back. This course is incredible, very rare in Japan. I am just so grateful to be able to play here."
Mikiya was able to have the practice round with Shugo Imahira and Mikumu Horikawa.
"I have known Shugo since junior days, but it is my first time to play with him after turning to Pro. I also had the privilege of playing in the same group with Ryo Ishikawa last week at Nitori Exhibition Golf. I know that there are so many hardship due to this pandemic, but it has also given me these precious chances."
Last season, on his 4th year as a Pro, he ended as 71st on Money Rankings and lost his seed.
"My goal for this season was to earn my seed and to be in the JT Cup. I did get the chance to be in this year, but I wasn't to earn it nest year. As for this week, I want to see how I can I stand up to this huge challenge at my current ability."
Mikiya will be in the same groupings with Hiroyuki Fujita, who has won 3 in a row in 2012 season and became the Order of Merit Champion.
"I would like to take in and learn every inch of Hiroyuki's golf tomorrow and figure out how he has won so many."
