JAPAN PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP by Sato Shokuhin 2021
Taisei Shimizu jumps up to 4T after R3 on his second tournament as a Pro
At 327 yards Par 4 No.5, his tee shot with 3I reaches the green and he made a magnificent eagle. He also had 7 birdies and a bogey for today's superb round. In his bag, he chose to have 2 wood clubs, no utility clubs, and have 2, 3, 4 Irons. This is very unique settings for nowadays.
Taisei just graduated from Nippon University. All of the college games were cancelled last year.
Even after he has decided to turn Pro, he tried out for Special QT, which the exemption spots were narrowed to 10. He did manage to finish as 5th, but his qualification status was added to the 2019 QT rankings and he became 55th on the rankings.
Taisei was finally able to join the Tour from Token Homemate Cup. But as Taisei recalled, "I got so nervous on my first ever game as a Pro", he missed the cut. After that event, he didn't have the chance for entry and this week is second tournament.
"I am very grateful for the chance, since I don't have many chances to be in the tournaments. I especially thank Ryuko Tokimatsu, who is my brotherly like figure."
Taisei and Ryuko both practices under the same coach. Taisei also has same "baseball grip" as Ryuko. They even grew up close by. It is just 20 minutes car drive to each homes.
"When we were kids, he always played golf together with me."
Now, Taisei is in contention at the tournament built from the scratch by the Players' Committee, which Ryuko leads as a Chairman. Also, another wonderful happening was that they will be in the same group on the final Sunday.
"I saw the trophy by the starting tent, it was really beautiful. I wish I could have my name engraved on it."
Presenter of the winner's trophy will be done by the Player's Chairman Ryuko. If Taisei wins, he will be tying the fastest winning record by Hideki Matsuyama in 2013. If Taisei could pull through and win, this will be the most desirable ending for the inaugural tournament all organized by the Players' Committee.
