21 years old amateur "Taiga" Sugihara jumps up with 65 with "Sunday Tiger" outfit
"My father is a great fan of Tiger."
He chose to wear "Sunday Tiger" red and black outfit with his college team mates today. He wore this color set on last year's Japan Open's R2 as he scored 66 to jump up on the leader board.
"I chose this color set for good luck today."
R2 was blessed with great weather and it helped Taiga to score bogey free 65. Very "Tiger-like" charge.
"Actually, I couldn't keep the fairway for past 2 rounds, but I managed."
He might be having trouble with his tee shots, but his iron shot and short games are very hot. Even when he misses the greens, he could get it done with his short games, as he made a great chip-in from collar of the green on 7th.
"Greens are so firm and slick, so there are places you must avoid."
He has checked the course precisely on the practice round, coloring the must avoid zones with x marks. This course management made him the club house leader after the morning group all holed out.
"I think I scored my best on the Tour."
In 2019, Taiga has won at Abema Tour's Ryo Ishikawa everyone Project Challenge, a 3rd amateur to do so. Now, he is looking to become the 5th amateur to win at the professional tournament following his college seniors, Hideki Matsuyama and Takumi Kanaya of Tohoku Fukushi University graduates.
"Hideki is above the clouds, and I don't have the charisma as Takumi."
He played along with last week's winner and also senior from his college, Naoyuki Kataoka.
"Naoyuki and Takumi were the Junior and Senior when I was a Freshman. I am so happy to see my admiring senior's win. Their victories motivate me too. I am Senior now and I wish I could be able to lead my Tohoku Fukushi University golf team with a good result this week."
