330 yards "longest drive of the day" by amateur Riki Kawamoto finishing 1 shot behind the leaders
Riki was in the afternoon starting group but was very motivated since he was in the same groupings with Tomohiro Ishizaka, who is now a professional, but still same Junior grader on university. Another playing partner was Kazuki Higa, who Riki says, "I have been close to Kazuki since junior days. Our ages are close, so we had fun playing together."
One another motivation was seeing 1 grade younger amateur, Yuta Sugiura's name up on the top of the leader board as Riki was getting ready to start.
"We went on the practice round together on Monday, and Yuta was saying the course is so easy. I was astonished."
Riki himself made a great start with 1 eagle, 3 birdies and 2 bogey round of 69.
"Fairways are very narrow, but the roughs are not so deep. I have checked the places which is forgiving and not forgiving. So, I think I have improved on my course management."
Riki also has shown his power, as he shot 330 yards on the measured hole 11th. He was awarded with the longest drive of the day and made an easy birdie.
"My plan is to play 3 under each day, and if I could accomplish that, 12 under for the win might be possible."
Riki is also seeking to get his hand on the ticket to the British Open, which is awarded to the winner of this week.
"I know it is going to be very tough to win here, but I have practiced as much as possible so, I hope I could perform as I wish and accomplish my goal."
Riki has just won at the junior tournament hosted by Ryo Ishikawa on May 6th, which was held at this Sagamihara GC.
"I am grateful for Ryo for selecting tough pin positions on that tournament. That gave me confidence. I hope I could continue this good momentum."
