Atomu Shigenaga makes 3 straight birdie finish to jump up to solo 2nd after 3R at Keya GC
On 16th, his 2nd with PW got to 2.5-meter. On 17 th Par 3 his tee shot with 5I got himself 10-meter birdie chance.
"I was glad that putt went in."
Then on final 18th Par 5, "I was finally able to find the fairway for first time this week", and he made 2 putts for birdie.
Keya GC underwent 2 years of major renovation.
"Long hitters are 100% benefitted on this course, so it has gotten more difficult for me", said Atomu after the 2nd Round. Course added 107 extra yardages, and many newly placed bunkers harm everyone's way.
"With my distance, it all gets swallowed into the bunkers. So, I had to avoid the bunkers and try to target to the narrow fairways. It is really tough."
But his effort is working and has been playing bogey free for past 2 rounds.
"T haven't made bogey yesterday and today. I think it is because I am being cautious that this course doesn't suits my game."
Atomu was very careful on 4 h, where he missed the green, and on other trouble holes, since he played will special caution. He was also able to find solution on the nasty Korai green, thanks to the support from his caddy.
Last week, Atomu had his illness, Ulcerative colitis again. In July he broke his rib.
"I am the most unhealthy and weak player on the Tour, but I have so many who supports me. National wide Drug Store chain store owner has given me supplements to get better. My buddies from high school came to the course to cheer for me. And also, today's volunteer is junior from my high school. So, although this course is really tough to conquer, the supporting power I am receiving from them is greater."
Atomu's best finish at Keya GC was 3T in 2015. Maybe he might be able to renew his record this week.
