Japan Open Golf Championship 2021
3T after 2T fighting tough at Biwako CC, but Satoshi Kodaira's heart belongs to USA
"My mind is set for going back to US Tours. That feeling hasn't changed."
He made 12-meter eagle on 16th, and he jumped to 3T with 10 under total.
"But I don't feel any satisfaction. When I think of my future I am not near satisfaction."
Satoshi accomplished a victory at 2018 RBC Heritage and became 5th Japanese player to win at US PGA Tour, but this season he missed saving his Tour Card by plunging to 150th on Money Rankings. He chose to challenge again from cub-tour Korn Ferry Tour. He came back to Japan last week to just to prep for his next season.
This is 2nd tournament after his return, which is the Major he has won back in 2015. But his mind is set on ZOZO Championship next week, as he has received sponsors invitation.
"My mind is always comparing with US PGA Tour standards. I figure out what the cutline and winning score would be by looking at the course settings. I may be 1 shot behind the leader today, but if this was in US PGA, I would be down around 20 to 30th. US PGA players will be shooting 16 to 17 under after 2 rounds on this course. Cutline will be probably 5 to 6 under or more."
3 years of struggle in US has made his mentality captured by PGA standards.
"What I can do right now is to play my best on each tournaments."
But playing in front of Japanese fans is making Satoshi happy.
"So many fans were having a lot of stress not being able to come to the tournaments. So, we must perform our very best and give excitement to the fans."
In 2014, Satoshi lost to Yuta Ikeda by 1 shot, and in 2015 Satoshi won against Yuta by 1 shot.
"We talked about it during the round. Yuta said that was his last victory in his 20s. We were both surprised how fast the time flies. No wonder I am old too. I was glad that we had a great battle for the first 2 rounds. I have learned that Yuta has improved, and I was able to show that I have did too. I hope we could battle great together on the Final Round. So, I will try to move up the leader board and want to show my fans and sponsors that I have potential."
