Bridgestone Open Golf Tournament 2021
Tomoyasu Sugiyama sends his deepest gratitude to so many for supporting him to achieve Tour V1
He also thanked Naoyuki Kataoka, who played out great rivalry on Final Round.
"His great shots and putts made my game to be better too."
Tomoyasu was a great sport as he called out nice birdie to Naoyuki on 6th, although he made bogey on that hole.
"I want younger player to feel comfortable as they play too. I want the whole group to have a good atmosphere."
He started out as a leader for the first time on the Final Round, at his first appearance at this tournament.
"I was under pressure. But I told myself that I should just concentrate on my strokes. Whether the putts go in or not is up to the Golf God. I planned my strategy to calculate the shots backward from the pin position, and it worked."
He was caught up by 14th hole, but he was calm.
"I told myself if I could get a birdie on 15th, then I could be aggressive on the 16th since my draw ball suites that hole. As I approached the finishing holes, I was able to see which line is easier and would give me higher success rate in making the putts. Today, I was good with hook lines."
On 15th, his 2nd shot from 126 yards with PW got to 2.5-meter to the pin and gave him hook line. He went on making another birdie at 16th as he planned, took away the victory by 3 shots.
Tomoyasu started golf at 5 years old with his grandmother's advice. He was raised by single mother, who he thanks so deeply for her support.
"Breakfast was ready, but she was already out working, and came home late. She offered me everything that I could concentrate on golf. I really want to thank her."
He said that he will give the full winning prize money to his mother.
He also thanked the Lake Wood GC where he works, for letting him practice and support him in many ways. He also thanked for many who cheered for him, including Yuki Inamori who waited for him at 18th green to congratulate with water shower. They have been best friends since junior days.
"Hideki Matsuyama is 2 grade elder of my high school. If I could have the chance to meet him at ZOZO Championship, I want to congratulate him on the victory at The Masters directly. I am honor to be in the same field with great hero like him."
