24 years old rookie, Yuki Furukawa made a great move on Friday and became solo 2nd with total of 9 under, just 1 shot behind the leader.
He had really good chances for 4 holes in a row from 14th but couldn't make them. That frustrations made him choose an eye-widening risky gamble-like shot at 18th.
"I really wanted to make birdie finish on that 18th, so I went for it."
His tee shot was caught in the right-side bunker, it was deep and also had tree right in front of him. But Yuki chose to courageously aim for the green on 2nd shot with 4U. Toru Taniguchi, who was in the same group and had planned to have dinner with Yuki tonight was thinking in his mind, "that is not courageous, it is stupid act. We will be having an evaluation meeting tonight before dinner".
Toru did tell Yuki, "You shouldn't have done that risky play" after Yuki made the shot, but result was more than great. He got the shot miraculously onto the green and 2 putted for birdie.
Toru was so surprised and said, "well, result was more than perfect, so there will be no evaluation meeting after all."
Yuki practices frequently with Toru Taniguchi and Taichi Teshima, as they are his seniors from same Fukuoka Prefecture.
"They always teach me many technics and course strategies. They have given me so much knowledge, they are like my father figure in the golf world. I am grateful that Toru was watching out so kindly today."
Actually, Toru and Taichi are about Yuki's father's age and Yuki is being taken really good care from them. This Phoenix CC was the stage for Kyushu Amateur Championship on Yuki's Senior year in university. He said, "I have experience here and that is advantage", but later on he said, "I couldn't recall the holes". Yuki is somewhat naturally goofed.
When he found out taking a glance at the leader board on 13th hole that his rival, Naoyuki Kataoka making the charge, he got really motivated.
"We are same grade and have been doing practice rounds together. I just don't want to lose against him. I want to battle out with Naoyuki tomorrow in the final group and steal the victory."
