Takumi Kanaya is wishing very hard to win this week and make the Order of Merit Champion title on his Rookie Year, as his admiring senior Hideki Matsuyama has accomplished. If Takumi pulls through, he will be the 2nd player to do so
"I am aiming to make birdie charge tomorrow."
Takumi is known to be a slow starter and he did start as 21T on the 1R, but he is also known to make big scores as the rounds goes by. He played with 67 on both 2R and 3R.
"My plan for today was to score better than 65."
He regrets his score for today, but he did get up to 6 strokes deficit against the leader Hideto Tanihara, which he feels that there is still a possibility.
In 2019, Takumi made to The Masters as an amateur, 2nd player to do so following Hideki Matsuyama. In November that year, he has won the SMBC VISA Taiheiyo Masters as an amateur, just like Hideki did and became 4 th amateur to win on the Regular Tour.
After turning professional last year in October, he won on his 3rd tournament, Dunlop Phoenix. He won again at Token Homemate Cup. From May to July, he was challenging overseas, and with being absent from the Japan Tour, he kept his position in the battle for the Order of Merit race.
If he wins the season sending event, he will be crowned with the Order of Merit title on his rookie year, which is again following Hideki and will become the 2nd player to do so.
"I just want to make as many birdies as possible tomorrow."
