What a nightmare! 1W broke just before Kunihiro Kamii's start and chance for victory slipped away
His first words were "I am regretful and upset."
Kunihiro's day started with a nightmare as he stood on 1st tee, his 1W which he has been relying upon for 3 years broke. His caddy was just in time to grab another 1W.
"We just happen to have another 1W with us. But it is not my sub club, totally different brand and different specs. I haven't used it for a while. So, this accident took me a while to calm myself down."
His shot lost stability on first tee shot of the day, and it went into the right-side roughs. He barely managed to save Par.
"I just couldn't get my stability back on my tees hots. I was really fighting hard to keep up with the contention. Since Kazuki Higa was playing so well, I wanted to play my best, but my mentality was not helping. I was worried with lack of confidence. I was looking forward for today's round but couldn't enjoy it."
Eventually, Kazuki took away the lead and the deficit was up to 3 shots. But Kunihiro didn't give up either. Kunihiro got caught in the water on Par 3 16th, but on next reachable Par 4 17th, he gave himself 8-meter eagle chance.
"I wanted to scare Kazuki a bit with that eagle chance."
He couldn't make the eagle but made birdie on 17th to lessen the deficit to 2 strokes. Then on final 18th, he courageously went for the green in two flying over the water, which barely made to the land.
He took off his shoe and a sock to stand one leg into the water to shit his 3rd shot, which he aimed for a chip-in. It wasn't a success, but Kunihiro referred, "I have done everything I could try."
"Come to think of it, my 1W did feel awkward at the end of 3R. I did have my gear break before, but never on the 1st tee. But it is my fault for not having prepared for any situation. I am grateful that my caddy got me the 1W in time, and I appreciate all of the support I received this week. I wish I could pay them back by winning soon."
