Tomoharu Ostuki suffered 2 shot penalty being late for tee time but still moved up to co-leader
Schedule changes due to bad weather sometimes make unpleasant accidents. Tomoharu Otsuki is one of the provisional leaders along with Hyun-Woo Ryu and Ryo Ishikawa at total 5 under. But if the unexpected accident hadn't occurred, Tomoharu would have been solo leader with 2 shots advantage.
"I was in shock, didn't know what happened", recalled Tomoharu on the accident at starting hole.
1R resumed from 6:30 this morning, but due to some delay, 2R's starting times were 25 minute behind schedule. Tomoharu's tee time was shifted to 12:10, but for some unknown reason, he added extra 30 minutes by mistake and was preparing for his tee off.
He thought he still had time before his tee time and he was walking toward putting green from the practice range, there Scott Vincent found Tomoharu and warned the staff.
Staff ran towards Tomoharu and told him that his tee time has already passed. Tomoharu ran to the teeing ground, didn't know how late he was. He could have been DQ if he was over 5 minutes late, but he was allowed to tee off.
"I was upset while I was hitting my tee shot, but from 2nd shot on, I was able to play well."
He got to 5-meter to the pin and made birdie, but suffered 2 shot penalty for being late, and ended the 1st hole as bogey.
"I wish there was no penalty, but that was not the only reason, but I told myself I have to make up for that penalty. It kind of motivated me."
Which did get Tomoharu on the birdie charge to achieve 7 birdies to make up for his loss.
He had nerve wrecking trouble at his start but, he finished as one of the provisional leader going onto weekend. He finished 4T last week and made his 10th Top 10 of the season, including 2 runner-ups.
"I hope I could play well tomorrow and give myself a good chance for Sunday."
