THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2022

Quayle passes major test

Australia’s Anthony Quayle ended his maiden Open campaign on a high note after signing off with his week’s lowest score of five-under-par 67 to finish tied-15th on Sunday.

Quayle’s four-day-total of 10-under-par 278 was 10 shots back of compatriot Cameron Smith’s winning total of 268. His only blemish on the final day came on the par-four six where he dropped a shot against the five birdies, he carded on holes three, five, eight, 10, 12 and 14.

Reflecting on his week where he posted rounds of 74, 69, 68 and 67, Quayle said: “I’ve always said I have the game to compete with the best players in the world and I managed to show that this week. I didn’t get off to a good start in the first round and if I had done better, I would have been up there in contention,”

“But overall, it’s a very good week and I hope to be back.”

Yuto Katsuragawa closed with a 69 to finish tied for 47th while Brad Kennedy was left to rue three bogeys in his closing six holes as he signed off with a 72 for a share of tied 53rd place.

“It was pretty disappointing to end the round that way. I probably need to take some time off to reflect and come back stronger,” said Kennedy, a multiple JGTO winner.

Philippines’ Justin De Los Santos, playing in his first major, posted a 74 to finish on tied-74th place.
