Hirata declared winner as Fujisankei Classic shortens to 36-holes contest

Kensei Hirata was declared the winner of the Fujisankei Classic as persistent unfavourable weather conditions forced the tournament to be shortened to 36 holes on Sunday.
 
Hirata’s two-day total of nine-under-par 131 after rounds of 68 and 63 saw him take home the winner’s prize purse of ¥11,000,000 which was reduced by 50% and also his fourth JGTO title.
 
“I felt nervous all morning due to the uncertainty of play. But I’m genuinely happy now. I woke up around 6 a.m. and was worrying about the weather. It was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences ever. 
 
"When I teed off for my second round yesterday, I knew I had to extend my lead in this tournament as much as possible since it was becoming so unpredictable. The birdie putt on the last hole yesterday was significant and I’m so glad it went in,” said Hirata.
 
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Shaun Norris took second place after returning with a one-under-par 69 on Saturday, finishing two shots back of Hirata while Yusaku Hosono secured third place with his 134 total at the Fujizakura Country Club.
 
This is the second time in the tournament’s history - after the 2011 edition - that has been reduced to 36 holes, following the 2011 tournament. It is also the ninth time in the history of JGTO that a tournament has been contested over 36 holes.
